In this project co-designed by Brenda Cleary, Samantha Nuttycombe and Katie Holmes middle school girls examined and deconstructed media stereotypes of and whiteness, thinness, and femininity that prey on their self esteem. While doing so they “reclaimed” Bratz dolls to give them normal girl faces, feet and body proportions.
Boys in the program used art based methods to explore award winning “The Mask You Live In” deconstructing masculine gender identity tropes with skilled mentors. The program lasted approximately 3 months and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
